In 2018, SIG Sauer forever changed the concealed carry landscape. The release of the P365 set the standard for a new category of small handgun: the micro-compact.

The success of this design is undeniable. It has been the top-selling handgun for several years since its introduction, and SIG continues to expanded the line. It’s easy to see why the 365 is popular, as there is a size and design to fit almost any concealed carry need and want.

Micro-Compact Design

With its quick takedown process, the P365 offers a lot of modularity with a single purchase. (All Photos: Zach Buth/Guns.com)

Prior to the release of the P365, most compact handguns were single-stack and thus limited in capacity. SIG designed a new category of handgun, small enough to fit into a pocket yet boasting a 10-round, double-stack capacity housed in a flush-fit magazine. This new capacity-maximized size was affectionately designated the SIG Sauer P365, as it was the perfect gun to carry every day of the year.

In addition to a high-capacity design, the handgun is also built off of SIG Sauer’s fire control unit concept that was introduced in the SIG P250 and really took off with the P320. The FCU is the serialized component of the handgun that is retained in the grip frame module with a simple punch.

Because the FCU is the serialized component, users can make quick and cost-effective adjustments.

The FCU can easily be removed and moved to different grip frame modules, allowing the user to have different size frames and magazines to best fit their needs. This also means you don’t have to spend a lot of money and go through a new 4473 anytime you wish to change the size of the grip frame.

Original P365

As referenced before, the SIG Sauer P365 was first released in 2018. The 9mm handgun features a 3.1-inch barrel, a standard 10-round capacity, and X-RAY3 tritium night sights. The P365 was also offered with or without a manual safety. The design is small enough to fit in your pocket, making it a great deep concealment candidate.

P365 SAS

One of the first variants of the P365 was SIG’s anti-snag design, or simply, the P365 SAS. This takes the standard P365 design and eliminates all of the protruding features like the sights and slide release.

With the elimination of the iron sights, the FT Bullseye sight is emcompassed in the slide. This illuminated fiber-optic sight is slim and sits completely flush with the top of the slide.

With muted external features, this handgun design is perfect for carrying in a pocket or soft holster, as there is nothing to snag during a draw.

P365 .380

In 2022, SIG released a new caliber for its popular micro-compact: the P365 in .380 ACP. This standard-size P365 not only features a new caliber, but includes some of the new X Series upgrades like the flat trigger and optics-cut slide, all while maintaining its small size.

Considering the popularity of the .380 ACP cartridge, it was an easy decision to expand the caliber, as it would have no impact on the size of the original design.

P365X

The next iteration of the P365 was the introduction of the X Series. The X denotes a few upgrades seen on other handguns like SIG’s P320. The most notable features are the flat trigger, optics-cut slide, and a distinguished grip angle.

The big upgrade with the X Series in the P365 is the larger frame size. Much like the P320 XCarry, the P365X features a compact slide with a slightly larger frame, bumping the flush-fit capacity to 12 rounds. The optics-cut slides and flat triggers would become mainstays for the line moving forward.

P365XL

Expanding on the P365X, SIG decided to offer a handgun that not only offered the extended grip and extra two rounds of capacity but had an extended slide and 3.7-inch barrel. This larger version was designated the P365XL.

Both the X and XL would be offered with flush-fitting 12-round magazines, as well as extended 15 and 17-round magazines. This increased size and capacity expanded the customer base, diversifying the reach of the P365.

P365X Wilson Combat

With great success in the firearms industry comes collaborations. One of the first collaboration P365s was built with Wilson Combat, a company known for customizing popular designs with its trusted gunsmiths.

The Wilson Combat P365X features a custom stippled frame that is also available as a separate upgrade to anyone looking to upgrade their grip module. The slide features custom serrations and anti-glare cuts between the iron sights. While it is not optics-cut, the slide does feature a red fiber-optic front sight and a blacked-out rear.

This comfortable Wilson Combat P365X brings a custom feel to a popular design.

P365 XL Comp Rose

One major initiative with SIG Sauer relating to the P365 is the Rose line. Rose by SIG Sauer is curated by Lena Miculek, daughter of legendary shooter Jerry Miculek. Lena is also a legend in her own right, competing in world championships, setting world records, and anchoring a talented lineup of shooters on the SIG Sauer competitive shooting team.

The Rose series is marketed specifically toward women, especially those who are new to shooting. The Rose handgun package includes everything you need out of the box, such as a small safe, snap caps, a magazine loading tool, lock, and spare magazines. The goal is to offer an excellent handgun design, along with the tools for success, including Rose-branded video training instructed by Lena Miculek herself.

The Rose line has a unique aesthetic with a rose gold accent color on all the handgun features, as well as a rose design in the grip stipple. The P365XL Comp Rose features that larger X-Series grip and the XL-length slide; however, the slide features compensation cuts and the barrel is the standard 3.1 inches of the original P365. The compensated slide greatly softens the recoil impulse, making it an easier platform to master.

P365 XMacro Comp

The SIG Sauer P365 XMacro Comp was released in 2022 and was one of the biggest upgrades to the P365 line. This new handgun featured an extended grip and a flush-fit 17-round capacity but still fit in the compact handgun category. The slide also features the same compensation cuts and 3.1-inch barrel introduced with the XL Comp.

The XMacro features the thin profile of the P365 and the X Series grip angle and flat trigger. The frame also features a M1913 accessory rail. The XMacro Comp is smaller than a Glock 19 but boasts more capacity and a flatter shooting experience.

P365 X-Macro

In addition to the Comp, SIG released a standard version of the P365 XMacro with a 3.7-inch barrel. Still compact, it’s geared toward those looking for a more conventional non-compensated handgun.

It is hard to beat a compact handgun that is as thin and small as the XMacro but has a 17-round capacity.

P365 XMacro TACOPS

In 2023, SIG again expanded on the line and released the P365 XMacro TACOPS. This version of the XMacro features a slightly taller frame, a beveled magazine well, and an extended slide release. This version of the XMacro is not compensated.

P365 AXG Legion

The last P365 XMacro Comp variant is the AXG Legion. All of SIG’s popular handgun lines have gotten a Legion upgrade, which can be easily overlooked as just a custom Cerakote and fancy branding, but it is actually a major upgrade to the platform. The Alloy X-Series Grip gives an added feel of weight to the handgun, making it easier to control. The weight, in addition to the compensated slide, make for one of the flattest-shooting compact handguns on the market.

The AXG Legion also features an extended slide release and a beveled magazine well. The handgun comes in the Legion gray finish with G10-style Legion grips. It is one of the most impressive concealed carry handguns on the market.

P365 Fuse

SIG Sauer introduced the newest edition of the P365 lineup, dubbed the P365 Fuse, in July of 2024. The term Fuse denotes the “fusion of capability and concealment.” This is the largest upgrade yet to the platform. Pushing into more full/duty-size, the Fuse features a 4.3-inch barrel and SIG’s new LXG (Laser-engraved X-Series Grip) with a custom stipple.

The handgun features a beveled magazine well, backstraps, a nickel-plated flat trigger, and a fiber-optic front sight. It uses the same flush-fitting 17-round magazines as the Xmacro, also introducing 21-round extended magazines.

The Fuse is very slim, yet large enough to fit a full-sized role. The impressive design continues to push the limits on the P365 platform.

Summary

SIG Sauer hit a home run with the P365 design. The P365 and its variants continue to be among the top handgun designs that find their way into outgoing boxes to FFLs all across the country from the Guns.com warehouse.

With a size and design for almost every application, it’s hard to tell if P365 really stands for every day of the year or the number of variants SIG has planned. Regardless, it’s easy to understand why it is one of the most popular handgun frameworks in the United States. What a treat it is to have so many of the variants in one place!
